1939 Atlantic White Flash Gasoline & Oil
    vintage baseball pamphlet
, featuring Philadelphia Athletics pitcher JACK COOMBS
    !!
    Please see all
    seven
photos, as they are an important part of my description. This 1939-dated fold-out pamphlet was issued as a promotion for
    Atlantic White Flash Motor Oil
. This was the very first of six (6) baseball-themed pamphlets issued with the
    Philadelphia A's
pitcher sharing his "baseball tips", with this pamphlet entitled
    "Points on Batting".
My first photo pictures the pamphlet in its folded form; my 2nd pic shows the back of the pamphlet (with send-away coupon clipped by its original owner). Photos #3,4 and 5 show the inside of the pamphlet, while my final two photos shows the pamphlet fully opened up. The back page features a promotion for
    Atlantic Gasoline & Oil
    , which describes this rather
    scarce
baseball ephemera as well as an opportunity to win a trip to the World Series (if you clipped the coupon and sent it away). Nifty piece of vintage baseball memorabilia!

    History
    :
    Jack Coombs
(aka John Wesley Coombs) was a top-flight Major League Baseball player who was a pitcher mainly for the
    Philadelphia Athletics
    but also the
    Brooklyn Robins
    and
    Detroit Tigers
. A two-way player, Coombs also occasionally played the outfield. Coombs set a number of American League and World League records which still stand and, when he won 31 games while losing only nine in 1910, he became one of only 13 pitchers to win 30 games in a season since 1900. Coombs was born in
    LeGrand, Iowa
    and moved with family to
    Kennebunk, Maine
at the age of four. Coombs was a graduate of Colby College, and was later nicknamed
    "Colby Jack"
after his alma mater. He later coached baseball for the
    Duke Blue Devils
(1929-1952); their baseball field is named after him. Coombs pitching record was an impressive 158-110, with a low ERA of 2.78. He was a 3-time World Series champion.
