Description
>Offered here for your consideration is a1983 THE BOWERMAN SYSTEM Track and Field Training Book, by Chris Walsh
!!
Please see all
eight
photos, as they are an important part of my description. The offered book is rather
scarce
; it was published in 1983 by Tafnews Press (Track & Field News). The book measures approximately 8 1/2" x 11", with soft covers; it contains 72 pages.
Bill Bowerman
was the long-time
University of Oregon Ducks
head track coach (1948-72). Bowerman's approach to training middle-distance and distance runners was predicated on the notion that athletes should not train "hard" everyday; Bowerman believed in the "hard-easy" principal...not that the "easy" day was like a day at the beach! But, overtraining was something his athletes tended to avoid because of his "Bowerman System" (or like coach preferred to call it, the "Oregon System"). The book's front cover pictures Bowerman twice, in an inset photo and a great image of him walking on the track at old
Hayward Field
here in
Eugene, Oregon
. The book's back cover pictures former Oregon great
Alberto Salazar
as he leads an Athletics West teammate,
Doug Padilla
. There are many outstanding photographs of Bowerman's pupils, including the legendary
Steve Prefontaine
(see photo #3): also pictured are
Bill Dellinger, Jim Bailey, Jim Grelle, Vic Reeve, Keith Forman, Archie San Romani, Dyrol Burleson, Kenny Moore, Wade Bell, Dave Wilborn, Terry Dooley, Tom Morrow, Scott Taylor, Steve Savage
and
Mike Long
. The book includes many pages of actual workouts that Coach Bowerman had devised himself (see final pic). Please don't snooze on this
scarce
track & field book, as it's uncommonly offered!
